The Biggest Name in Food & Wine In Carmel By The Sea

Chef Pèpe has been part of Carmel's culinary scene since purchasing Carmel Bakery, the oldest retail business in 1985. Prior to purchasing the property Pèpe worked up the street at Wishart's Bakery mastering his baking skills.

In 1990 Pèpe and his wife Sandra opened Little Napoli Bistro Italiano. Next came Pèppoli at Pebble Beach with its beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean opened in partnership with Italian winemaker Piero Antinori and the Pebble Beach Company in 2000, followed by Vino Napoli Wine Bar in 2007 and Vesuvio Trattoria in 2010.

Pèpe and Sandra's sons, Christian and Gian Antonio, have followed their parents into the world of food, wine and cocktails and our an integral part of the family business as it enters its second generation. On the rooftop of Vesuvio's is Starlight Rooftop Lounge, one of the hottest bar scenes in town and where you will find Mixologists Christian Pèpe and Jason Wallace mixing, stirring and shaking up thier specialty crafted cocktail creations.

I found myself getting lost browsing through Chef Pèpe's website, I found him to be creative, fasinating and humble. Make sure before you leave his website that you check out his shop where you can find his handcrafted Wine, PèpeCello, an Italian-Style Lemon Liqueur with a Splash of California, Little Napoli's Pasta Sauce and his son, Christian's Single Barrel Cocktails. After purchasing his PèpeCello come back to this page for some refreshing cocktail recipes.

No stranger to getting up early, the motto for Pèpe and his baking crew at Carmel Bakery is “we bake while you sleep”. As Pèpe says, “For over 100 years the bakers at Carmel Bakery have supplied the ‘village in the forest by the sea’ with fresh baked goods, and I am so proud to own this piece of Carmel history”. Equal parts bakery, deli, Starbucks Coffee Bar and neighborhood hangout, Carmel Bakery specializes in Scottish shortbread, English scones, Italian biscotti and giant soft Bavarian pretzels. Deli-style sandwiches, house made soups and fresh salads are also served.

Viva Little Napoli–Little Napoli is lively as a festa, packing more Italian charm into its cozy quarters than most big city restaurants. Chianti is served by the glass and olive oil is poured into saucers printed with sensible advise such as “non parlare, baciami” (don’t talk, kiss me). All the talking and kissing stops quickly when the generous plates of food arrive at the table. Viva Little Napoli. – Reprinted quote from Gourmet Magazine

Pèppoli at Pebble Beach captures the look and feel of dining in a Tuscan villa, albeit one overlooking the famous golf links and the Pacific Ocean. Rich earth tones, tapestry-style awnings and Tuscan ceramics grace the restaurant. One entire wall serves to showcase the wines, while another feature is a terracotta grill and rotisserie.
